Founded in 2009 by David Keyte, Universal Works was born from a simple vision to create real, honest garments that embody the perfect fit without unnecessary over-design.
Inspired by David's upbringing in a provincial Midlands' town during the seventies, where dressing well was a way of life for his working-class family, Universal Works draws on a rich heritage of formative experiences. From observing his Dad and Uncles in their timeless workwear to witnessing the vibrant subcultures of the eighties while working as a sign-writers apprentice, and gaining invaluable knowledge from the fashion industry giants like Paul Smith and Maharishi – every element contributes to the DNA of the brand.
At Universal Works, we believe in the harmonious blending of ideas, where heritage and context meet contemporary needs and aesthetics. We champion skilled, small-scale production, partnering with trusted and admired factories in both the UK and overseas. This commitment ensures the highest quality standards while nurturing a sustainable approach to fashion.

Since our inception, Universal Works has garnered a loyal following, and our presence has expanded from ten retailers to a global reach, with stockists from Los Angeles to Seoul. Our head office and web store are nestled in Nottingham, and we proudly operate three physical stores – UW Soho in London, opened in August 2013, UW Kings Cross in London's Coal Drops Yard, opened in October 2018, and our most recent addition, UW Nottingham on Derby Road, which welcomed visitors in January 2023.
In 2021, we marked a significant milestone with our first standalone European store in Berlin, Germany – a joint venture with long-term stockist Truffelschwein. This partnership follows our successful collaboration within Liquor Store, situated in the vibrant city of Birmingham, England.
