As in professional baseball, America's Black Citizens were for many decades shut out of participation in the fraternal organizations which were a major part of the social fabric in the United States. African-Americans therefore created their own organizations, and the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, or "Black Elks" - were formed in 1899. The Monarch Lodge #45 in Harlem was one of the most important local chapters of the Black Elks. They were involved in the fight for fair labor practices and many other social justice causes. They also fielded a fine baseball team, called the Mi-Tee Monarchs. We were fortunate to see color photographs of this historic 8-panel cap, and it is one of our current favorites.
